ASUS P4P800 SE --RTC and performance issue

Hi,folks,

Recently I just bought a second-hand Asus P4P800 SE mainboard .
Basically it founctions normally, howerver 2 problems popped up after
I oc my P4 2.8C to 3.54G(1010 FSB)

First is about the RTC, when I checked the time setting in BIOS, I
found that the clock wasn’t going. But after I switched back the CPU
frequency, it returned to be normal. Is it because of the overclock
that causes this problem? But except this RTC issue, my CPU works
stable under 3.54G frequency.

Second is about the unexpected low performance of my CPU. I use a
single 512 DDR400 ram module on this board(2.5-3-3-6), however after I
runned the aquamark3 test, my cpu score turned out to be only 9603(I
tried several times, but the score never exceeds 9900), that’s too
slow!!?
I got information from ARC(Aquamark3 record comparision) forum that
this score from many PCs using similar CPU like mine cound reach
11000~12000, why is my score so slow??

No idea on the RTC. The RTC circuit is inside the Southbridge,
and the clock for the RTC is provided by a 32KHz clock crystal
located next to the Southbridge. Generally, nothing should
be able to disturb the clock - only software writes to the
RTC registers should be able to influence the operation of
the RTC. (Question for you - if you overclock for a while,
then stop and use a normal clock, does the RTC show any lost
time, or is the time shown then correct ?)

As for overclocks, I think Intel Southbridges occasionally lose
their AC97 sound output, if you overclock. One thing you could
try, is set the AGP/PCI lock to 66.66/33.33MHz (instead of
"auto"), as using the lock will also set the hub clock to
66Mhz, and prevent the Northbridge from being overclocked
as well.

As for performance, since you are using a single stick of
RAM, you are losing the advantage of dual channel operation
of the memory. So, that is a potential loss of performance.
Adding a second matching stick will give a tiny performance
boost (maybe 10% on a good day).

A second reason, could be your drivers. You should install
Intel chipset drivers (INFINST.exe), video card drivers,
and directX. The magnitude of your slowdown, suggests you
don't have the chipset drivers installed. The one driver you
need from there is AGP440.sys or the like. One thing
the driver does, is allow the AGP interface to be recognized
as AGP and not as PCI.

You can verify how the hardware is set up, by using Powerstrip
from entechtaiwan.com . The Option item in the taskbar popup
menu, will show you whether AGP is enabled, and whether DMA
or DIME is being used for texture transfer. If any settings
are not enabled or being used, find out why. (I only use
the status functions in Powerstrip, and prefer to fix the
problem, without relying on Powerstrip to override stuff.)

I know it's not the same board, same chipset, or even ANYWHERE closely
related... But I do have an asus board with a RTC chipset fault (RTC goes
too fast sometimes)..

My setup is a AMD system with a A7N8X-D but I do get a fault similar so Mayb
it's a amd design fault...

Anyhow.. I finally track'd down "WHEN" it happens to me. It happens on a
warm boot.. So any time I test OC settings I might go into the bios and then
save&reboot but the clock will be wrong.. If this is what your doing then do
a Save&Reboot, then turn ur pc off when you can.. give it a few seconds and
repower the system..
Cold boot = Good clock
Warm boot = Fast clock
It's worth a try I guess.
