hey,
i upgraded my motherboard and noticed something sort of strange, in
the device manager it claims that i have two cpu's.

here is my system:
asus p4p800 2.4 (only one cpu on the board)
intel 865pe chipset
512 mb pc3200
ati radeon 9000 128mb
windows xp

i tried uninstalling one of the cpu's but after rebooting, there they
were again, two of them.
any thoughts?

thanks
geordie

p.s. everything seems to work fine as it is now.

Mine too. Hyperthreading?

Ed Jay (remove M to respond)

If you have the 800 MHz FSB version of the P4 2.4, then it has
HyperThreading and runs as TWO processors.

Turn off hyperthreading in bios if you want to run in single processor mode.

It may. some multi-threaded apps have bugs normally hidden. HT speeds
things up so much these bugs may then crash the app or the system if
its a driver.
I find XP amzinginly responsive with HT, I compress a 1gig file and
play a game with very little slowdown. Downside is 3 apps I like to
use blow-up.
