Asus P4800 mainboard - What's the -E difference?

Hi!

My vendor has both the ASUS P4C800 Deluxe-UAY mainboard and the P4C800-E
Deluxe-UAY mainboard. The only difference that I can see is that the -E uses
an Intel gigabit network chip instead of the 3Com chip. The -E version is
$20 more than the non -E version, but I can't see why.

Are there any other differences between these boards? I'm leaning towards
the non -E as the 3Com LAN chip also does "virtual cable testing".

Non -E version:

I hope you're not planning on -trying- to use the Via raid controller chip
on these boards..

Well I suppose if you want Gb networking, $20 for the adapter with no
extra PCI slot taken, is a steal.

Both are gigabit adapters...

Features on the website are out of order when comparing them, but they seem
to be almost identical.

Eventually... but just starting with a single 120gig WD SATA drive.

....from my vendors specs and the ASUS website, they have Promise RAID
controllers. The VIA part is the FireWire controller. I thought VIA did the
RAID as well, but that wasn't the case when I checked the specs.

Hi,

The P4C800 E De Luxe has a different south bridge. (ICHR5). This bridge
offers Intel Raid instead of Promise Raid (which is on the P4C800 De Luxe)
and as already mentioned an different network chip.

Via does the raid on the IDE.. It's bad news from what I've read, even in
non raid mode.
