Has this old monther with a dual boot system (winME and winXP).
Recently replace the old ASUS 3800 AGP display card to TNT M64 which is
suppose to support 4X AGP.

When I boot to WinME. Display driver indicate AGP card running at 4X without
problem.
However, when I boot to WinXP, it only indicate 2X.

I remeber long time ago it use to have a Registry patch for 2X or 4X. Where
can I find this info ?

Have the same board and used a 4x (well, 8x) card (now in this system) on it
and had the same results.

The bottom line is, you can force 4x either with the hack or by turning fast
writes on, but odds are it's going to make your computer crash. The P3V4X
lacks the "drive strength" to do AGP 4x reliably on newer cards.

However, it's quite possible it works for you if it's ok in ME at 4x and it
is a pretty old card.

The VIA 4in1 drivers should install the patch automatically, but only if you
install it AFTER the display drivers.

I believe the newer NVIDIA drivers disable AGP 4X on some of those VIA
chipsets because the chipset has a design flaw with insufficient AGP signal
drive strength that makes it unable to run at 4X reliably..

Check, it seem already turn on in the registry.

Thanks. I install the 4 in 1 driver again after installing the card.
Result is still the same. RUnning at 2x with WinXP but 4x with WinME on the
same PC.

Did you turn on Fast Writes in the BIOS? That's the only thing that enabled
4x under XP for me.

Yes, I have fast write in the BIOS (also when I dual boot to WinME, I get 4x
within problem).
Did some research with internet. It seem there is some know issue with VIA
chipset mother board with Nvidia driver running under WinXP. So 4x function
is disable under WinXP with VIA driver !

However, some web site indicate this problem is VIA with GF2 series only. I
am using only TNT M64. So I am totally lost of how to re-enable 4x function
for my PC.

I'm telling you, I have the EXACT SAME BOARD and EXACT SAME SYMPTOM, but 4X
was on when I turned on fast writes.

Did you try updating to P3V4X BIOS version 1.006 Beta? I found that improved
things for me.

Also, be aware that the registry patch mentioned here is only for 9x
systems, it's meant to be put in a different location under XP.

oh, that's good.
My board is already at 1006.003 BIOS. I search the WinXP registry, it has
many location already with the enableagp4x statement.

What version is your VIA driver? I am on 449. My NV display driver is at
45.23 (both WinME and WinXP, however WinME is fine without problem).

I have the "EnableVia4x" in followng location of my WinXP registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVDIA Corporation\Global\System
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\nv4\Device0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\nv4\Device0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nv4\Device0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nv4\Device0

Did you put the second part of the tweak in?

I am confused because turning fast writes on automatically forced 4x support
for me, but it doesn't seem to work for you.

Oh, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it to you - I know it's an ego
thing, but 2x vs 4x on that particular board would make less than 0.1%
difference in performance. Don't worry though, I was equally upset at having
to run in 2x... of course on my new mobo, the same card is running at 8x
finally! :-) And I put the venerable Voodoo5 back in my P3V4X.

Thanks. Someone did mention there would not be much speed different between
the 2.
Actually, I use PC mainly for word processing and office package. Hardly
need a fast graphic.
May be is just feeling ! Feel better to have 4x since both card and board sa
4x support.

Anyway, thanks very much for your tips.
