ASUS P3B dual PIII machine doesn't complete boot--memory not shown in system summary screen

I have an ASUS P3B board I have used for years as a Win2k server.
Last night I went to add a second 256 MB stick of memory since the
machine seemed a bit cludgy after I put SP4 on Win2k. To my surprise
the machine failed to boot with the new memory. I removed the memory
and the same symptoms remain. I am using the original Award bios.

1. BIOS detects memory.
2. No post beeps--system gets through initial post memory check, drive
detect screen fine.
3. System hangs on following "system summary" screen which shows
drives but no memory.

I have never seen anything like this.

Can anyone suggest what to do?

Load BIOS defaults, save and exit. Use only the old RAM module. Failing
this, reset the CMOS.(Take the battery out for ten minutes) The Intel 440BX
can not properly "see" newer modules of PC133. You will need to source "low
density" 16 chip PC133 or PC100 memory. Crucial.com is a good resource.
