My son bought a new computer 2 days ago running XP. He has just
installed SP2 and now machine refuses to boot.

Any suggestions how to he can get going again?

Remove SP2, then, with the computer in the condition it was prior to
installing SP2, including any installed hardware and software, place the XP
CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System
Compatibility." The report it generates may give a clue as to the source of
the issue.

Are you able to boot into safe mode? If so try to remove

hi there

usually sp2 should not cause the computer not to boot! if so, try do
start your computer with the "last known good configuration" (or sth
like that, i'm using a german version, so i dont excactly know the
english string +g+)... du can reach that option by pressing F8 _before_
windows starting screen, in the boot menu of windows...

but one question: you installed sp2 and just after the reboot it
wouldn't start up any more? i can't believe this ^^

I've seen the problem with SP2 rendering a system unable to get to the
Desktop. On occasion it is due to hardware incompatibilities. You can read

Running a Repair Install (instructions here
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm) will remove SP2.

Where did your son purchase the computer? One problem that can cause a
system to go into an endless restart after SP2 is installed is if the
install of Windows XP was hacked using a known activation crack. The crack
worked marginally OK with the original version of XP and with SP1 but it
can't cope with SP2 and the computer simply reboots as soon as you near the
log on screen. You can't even get into Safe Mode. If your son purchased XP
preinstalled and it had this activation hack on it then your will have a lot
of trouble getting rid of it. You may well have to do a clean install and
then apply SP2.
