Hi all,

Thinking of buying the above board with an AMD 64 3500+ Winchester.

Anyone built the same and have any stories of woe or stories of unhindered
success?

What's the wifi card like? Has anyone set up a p2p network with it?

Thanks

Hi, have the very same motherboard and CPU combination. Runs like a dream,
setting up was a doddle, put XP on first, then SP2, if you've not a
slipstreamed version of XP, the latest, I mean latest Via Hyperion's from
here http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&Type=1 then the video
card drivers and then the rest. Did try the wireless once but prefer wired.
Make sure you put the card in slot 4 if you can.....

There have been all kinds of bios issues with the 1.02 rev board - these
have for the most part been addressed with the release of the rev 2.0 board
in the last few months of 2004.

The problems were things like not getting dual channel to work properly, not
liking Winchesters and having no PCI/AGP lock. Like I said all of these seem
to have been finally ironed out. My rev 2.0 with a 3000+ Winchester are
zooming along nice and happily thank you at "HTT/FSB's" of 270MHz - that's
2.43GHz so getting into 3500/3800+ territory :o)))

It prepared to stand corrected, however I seem to recall having read in a
number of places that there are no WiFi ver 2.0 - and that and WiFi boards
out there for sale are old stock and therefore ver 1.02.

I've been torturing my rig pretty good over the last couple of weeks - the
only problem I've encountered is with the gigabit LAN choosing not to work
every so often.

Hi, I have rev 2.0 deluxe with wifi here in the UK, all current board sold
will have a bios compatible with Winchesters. PCI lock is fine, unless you
overclock with a Sata drive connected to the Via controller. If you don't
overclock then use the Via and disable the promise as it give faster bootup
times and is generally quicker all round.....

Ideally I want to get the wifi version but have read about probs with
Winchester CPUs with early versions of the board. I am looking at buying it
from dabs.com - I am in the UK too.

Thanks for your views/help, etc.

Just one additional question.

Is it OK to buy one RAM DIMM to start with and add another later? I know
this board supports dual, but will it work with 1 to start with if forced?

All is very good appart this point, but if you need wifi don't count on
this board.

Chris, could you elaborate on your comment about the PCI Lock and the VIA
SATA controller, please?
I have an A8V (Rev 2.0) w/ A64 3200+ running at 2.2 GHz with a spare drive
(storage only) connected to the first VIA SATA controller. I have the
PCI/AGP set to locked in the BIOS and I had *assumed* that raising the FSB
was not increasing the AGP/PCI speed with this setup?
Perhaps I'm misinterpreting your comment, but before I attempt to go higher,
I'd like to know if I'm on the road to hell (so to speak). I'm running
recently acquired PC4000 memory and had hoped to get to 2.4 GHz with this
rig.
Thanks for any feedback.

Hi, it's known that if you overclock with a Sata drive connected the Via
chip that you run the risk of data corruption. This is because the Via
bypasses the PCI/AGP bus thus not fixed by the lock in the bios. If you are
going to overclock then you should use the promise.....

Thanks very much, Chris!
I'll switch controllers before continuing.

I can verify this, I tried to go above 2GHz with my 3000+ Winchester and
screwed up my WinXP install due to data corruption.
I have been sitting on a 10% overclock ever since (1998 GHz).

Having heard this advice, methinks it's time to re-enable the Promise
controller.

BTW, I bought my A8V in October from Dabs and it came with the 1007.002
BIOS which was the first one to support the Winchester chips.

Hi, I was only showing that Ver2.0 came with wireless, besides, Dabs seem
not to have in stock...

Just wanted to thank you again, Chris.
I'm at 2.4 GHz running cool and stable. Without your advice, who knows where
the data on the SATA drive might be now :)

YW...
