Asus A8N-SLI chipset fan failing; how to replace?

I'm pretty disappointed this fan is near-inoperable after less than 6
months of operation. How can you replace this fan? It seems to be
attached by a couple of springy bolts. Can you pop the fan off without
taking the whole motherboard apart and out of the case?

where the spring-loaded pins are plastic, you can always butcher them with a
wire cutter or pliers. This means you'll need new pins with the replacement
heat sink.

Alternatively, carefully peel back the label and put in a few drops of
sewing machine oil or Castrol 5W30. This will keep the fan going for a short
while.
I had the same problem with the same board after a couple of months.
Did end up taking the mobo out to squeeze the rear of the pegs together.
Didn't want to damage the board.

On a plus point, the new fan they sent me was bigger, operated at lower
rpm and was therefore a lot quieter. You have to mount it diagonally,
which they didn't tell me at first, but it was worth the hassle.
