Hi.
I'm having trouble installing a new machine based on this mobo.
I have a 160GB Maxtor HD that I'm going to install here.
I have downloaded Maxtor's own software for setting up the new HD/machine.
I have set it up with 2 partititions, and copied the raid/SATA drivers to a
diskette.
When the winxp bootcd asks for 3rd party scsi and raid drivers, I press F6,
and when asked, I choose Winxp drivers for my HD. When install finishes
reading on cd etc. however, it reports that it can't find any HD to install
on on my system.
What am I missing here? -I am going by the (thin) manual here.....

Best regards
Tony K.

I may be wrong, but :

Either SATA is on your motherboard, or you have a add-on card.

If it came with the motherboard, you will have to copy to controller's
drivers and txtsetup.oem .file from the install CD.
If you have an add-on card, it should have come with the necessary
drivers on a diskette or CD.

I have an ASUS A7N8X-ER motherboard with a Silicon Image controller,
and that is how I install on the SATA drives.

For what it is worth...(it may be different other hardware.

Are the Sata drivers from your motherboard cd driver files ?
The drivers I have on my diskette is the latest version, created from
Maxtor's own downloaded program cd-rom iso.
The S-ATA drivers that follows the mobo seems to be available to install
from windows itself, but that is no issue here. I have'nt got anything on my
HD yet.

It is Silicon Image Controller that is bundled with the mobo -but when I
read the manual, I can't find any description to install this before I can
use the HD and install WinXP. It only describes a windows install of the
drivers.
If it is drivers I can install form this cd prior to a windows install, then
the cd should be bootable, not?

SATA is on the mobo, and not a add-on-card.

I just can not figure out how to get the system/HD up and running to install
WinXP.....

Got it right now!
I used wrong drivers. I tried to install using the driver from Maxtor -the
HD manufacturer.
I should of course use the driver provided with the Asus CD -Silicon Image
SATARaid 3312.
But; I had to copy the drivers onto a floppy manually, and I could find no
readme.txt to explain the procedure to do this.
Very bad end user treatment, I think.....
Thnx for our suggestions and interest guys.

Here is the text of winXP installation procedure found
on my Asus board CD.

Follow the instructions in this section if you are performing a new
installation of Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000/XP, and you wish to
boot from a device attached to the SiI 3112 controller.

=========================
1. Power off the system. Connect the hard drives to the SiI 3112
controller and insert the controller into a PCI slot. Power up
the system.

2. Put your Windows NT/2000/XP CD into the CD-ROM/DVD drive, or
the NT/2000/XP boot diskette #1 in the floppy drive if your
system cannot boot from the CD.

3. Press F6 for third party SCSI or driver installation at the beginning
of text mode installation. Press 's' when setup asks if you want to
specify an additional device, and insert the diskette labeled
'Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATARaid Driver Installation Disk' .

Press 'Enter' and select
'Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATARaid Controller'

4. Press 'Enter' to continue on with text mode setup.

5. Follow the setup instructions to select your choice for
partition and file system.

6. After setup examines your disks, it will copy files to
Windows 2000 installation folders and restart the system.
The setup program will continue and finish the installation
after restart.

7. Wait until Windows 2000 finishes installing devices, regional
settings, networking settings, components, and final set of
tasks, reboot the system if it is required.

This is quite correct, however -the description says nothing about where or
how to obtain the right drivers onto the floppy.
That is a little guesswork on the users behalf, when browsing the cd i chase
for the right files to copy.
The floppy should be bundled with the new mobo, I think.

Those are the files present on the floppy I use.
I found them on my motherboard's installation CD.
