The fan on the chip set is starting to die, it makes a horrible noise. Is
this fan actually needed, or will the mobo work ok with it unplugged?
thanks

This is a really common problem - I had the same thing happen to mine.

You should put some sort of fan on this chip since its your
northbridge chipset and will get hot if left uncooled. Aside from the
fact your system will probably randomly freeze up if the chipset gets
too hot.

The cooling fans or heatsinks from the older graphics cards work well.
You can still buy these and pretty much any one will work ok. The
rentention of the device is the main concern and fan voltage if it has
a fan. Mine had little springy things so I found a fan with the same
hole spacing - put a bit of cpu heatsink paste on it and wacked it on.

If you have a problem with attaching a heatsink Arctic Silver make a
glue/paste which actually can be used to bond a heatsink to the chip
itself.

Regards

Jason

Radio shack needle oilier- I think it has Teflon in it. I wouldn't hesitate
to use 3 in 1 oil, motor oil, or vegetable oil. Any oil is better than no
oil at all. These bearings are sintered bronze which will soak up and hold
most all oils. If you need instructions just post back.

Same thing happened to me on my "E" board. Just get a Zalman passive type to
replace yours-no fan. Works very well. That noise from the original fan was
scary when it was going. Regards, Chris
