I tried to upgrade my Win2kPro system with the Asus A7A133 Mainboard,
256 MB RAM, GeForce4 MX system to Windows XP Pro. It installed fine,
rebooted, on froze on the splash screen. This happened a while ago and
I got used to 2kPro. Now, I'm wishing I had remote desktop and am
going to try WinXPPro and if that fails Win2k3 Server. Is the
motherboard going to shaft me again? Can I prevent the shaft in the
first place?

Does it do this in safe mode as well? If not, you might want to try to
boot into safe mode, and then remove most of the system drivers.

At work I've done upgrades as well as clean installs on the same system
(albeit not with an A7A board), where the clean install XPpro would run
just dandy, but the upgrade would give lots of driver problems,
sometimes even resulting in crashes or freezes.

Another approach might be to first create a dual-boot setup, so you can
test and tweak XP without having to abandon the W2K install at the same
time. When you find your XP setup runs to your satisfaction, you can
migrate quite easily.
