Asus 9600XT Offering - any users?

1. Any additional comments beyond those at the newegg site?

I like my 9600XT....great card. I started with the Asus 7.95 drivers
off the CD then tried the ATI 3.9's but went back to the CD drivers
as I was having a small problem. Turns out it wasn't the ATI drivers
but something totally unrelated. I am now running the Omega ATI
3.10 drivers and everything works great.
2. Any users have this item and know if the heatsink is glued/bonded with
thermal epoxy or can it be readily replaced with a heatpipe cooler or other
cooler when the [normally cheapie stock fan dies]?

Asus talks of their heatsink as being a heatpipe. I'll tell you one
thing, if this card is made anywhere near as good as Asus motherboards
it will be build VERY well. I understand Asus did some circuit
rerouting when compared to the ATI reference 9600XT card but it's
nothing that will stop us using ATI drivers. They just thought it
would make the 9600XT more stable.

I only run MS Flight Sim 2004 and no other games so I can only comment
on that. My scenery is all set at Ultra High and it looks great. My
frame rates are double what I was getting with my old 440DX 64 meg
Nvidia card. I'm not a big fan of high frame rates when it comes to
Flight Sim....I feel super high quality scenery at 25 fpm is all I
ask. :-)

Thanks for the response.

I just discovered this link,
http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/

which is a driver cleaner, and as you mention the switch, might be handy.

What CPU are you running?. I just got my ATI9600XT and frame rates really
jumped compared to old MX400, but I still get sticky, slow performance near
major airports on arrival. Like down to 9FPS. My CPU is pretty old P4/1.9 so
that maybe the cause. Any thoughts?

Hi Bill....I have an Athlon XP at 1.8ghz & 512 meg ram.

I have turned down the AI aircraft and the weather. I had the AI at
about 35-40 but have now turned it down to 20. I run the weather now
at Medium High. I have been slowly bring the frame rates up 1 notch
at a time. I'm at 26-fpm right now and no troubles. Both Scenery and
Aircraft are at Ultra High.

Thanks. I dont know how the Athlon speeds compare to Intel but looks close
enough.

I guess I just have to keep tweaking.

My 1.80ghz Athlon is supposed to be the equivalent of a 2.2 ghz P4.

Start with the weather settings. I have heard running Ultra High or
HIGH weather settings really gives a frame rate hit. Same with the AI
aircraft if you have them cranked up.
