Assistance on Windows mail setting question please

Hello,
I'm looking for help setting my messages not to open automatically when I
delete one. When I am reading a message and hit delete the next message
automatically opens. This is important to me because some junk/spam still
gets in. Due to my line of work I can not use the highest filter. I searched
help to no success. Can anyone help me?

If you're using the Preview Pane turn it off from View | Layout. Then
always close the message window before deleting a message.
