Whenever I download (save to disk) a document, whether
directly from the Internet or an e-mail attachment,
Windows XP assigns the extension .bmp. A Microsoft Word
document, sent as an email attachment, for example, is
saved as FILENAME.DOC.BMP. This is merely an annoyance
with most downloads; I can't open them, since the bitmap
reader obviously won't read them online, but I can save
them to disk and erase the spurious extension. However, it
interferes with receipt of automatic software upgrades,
which are downloaded as FILENAME.EXE.BMP and are frequently
rejected during download.
