I have been trying to use files obtained from a VA
database as downloded to either XP Professional MSword or
Excel. The files are always wrapped to 2 rows of
columns. How can I unwrap the colums into a single line
so that I can editthe files? I have querried the
National Service Specialists at VA Central in Washington
and they tell me that the downloaded files are useless
for other than printing. Can anyone help? Thanks

Clay, I have had some success with manipulating information from other
programs in Word. You say that they are in two columns. Are they in a
table? Or, is there something else separating them. For example a tab?
If it's in a table, here is what I would do. Highlight the table. Convert
the table to text (table menu). When asked - Separate the text with?
Asnwer with paragraph mark. Each item on the left will slide over and under
the item on the left. Now highlight the entire list and Convert from text
to table, to put them back into a table. Or...you can save the document as
a .txt file and then import it into an Excel file. From Excel you would
simply "open file" change type to all, find the .txt file and open. Follow
the instructions and your file will then be in Excel. If you don't need it
in one column as describes above, just save the word document in .txt and
when opening in excel, select delimited and click TAB. I hope this helps.
