Aspnet password demand in Safemode

XP Home Edition SP2 Norton Antibirus but not running
Have read all the threads. Opening in safe mode and carrying out all the
instructions is continuing to display 'aspnet' and requesting a password.
Attempted several times without success.

Advice would be appreciated to help an elderly gentleman claim his system
back.
With thanks

I don't see what you are trying to do.

You are starting in Safe Mode, and on the Welcome screen, you are trying to
use the ASP .NET account?

That account has a blank password, by default, as does the default
"Administrator" account that you should also be seeing on the Welcome
screen.

"Attempted" what several times?

Try disabling startup items in MSConfig to identify which application may be
invoking the "aspnet" login. Also I would suggest running the Belarc Advisor
to check for missing security updates.

You have been installing all critical security updates from Windows Update
(automatic), haven't you?

Hello Mark,
Simply trying to get into Windows with Safe Mode. This demand for aspnet
password could not be overcome and therefore windows would not open.

AVG check earlier had revealed Trojans in the system which had been sent to
the vault. Suspected that these had been responsible for the present
trouble. Since there were quite a few, it was quite possible that much
mischief had been caused.

Wiped the disc, reloaded Windows, ran Windows Update, Updated AVG, ran AVG
check on all files, checked user file back-up medium with AVG. Loaded the
files. Ran another AVG check of everything. Ran Malware check - clear.
System running faster - all applications running correctly. Created restore
point.

I now know a little more and hope it will now be OK.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate it.
Rgds,
Jean

Allan,
As you will see from message to Mark, I hope the problem is resolved.
Possibly a Trojan.

I am glad for the info. on Belarc. Yes, he updates Windows properly.
I ran a mainframe but have to get up to speed with PCs. Use the same
housekeeping criteria. Incidentally, I was nearly fired for ‘being too
cautious’ (not letting staff fiddle)! Can you? Have discussed ‘best
practices’ with him, so possibly he’ll have no further problems. Have
learned one or two things myself in the last few days.
Thanks for sharing your knowedge and expertise – it’s appreciated.
Rgds,
Jean
