I have just found in Control Panel/User Accounts that
there is a new account that I did not set up called
ASP.NET. It does not show on the Welcome screen on start-
up.

Is this sinister in any way and how did it get there? I
have deleted the account and all its files - is this
sufficient?

John,

I just noticed the same account on my system as well and
wonder what it is. I have just started recently seeing
the Welcome screen and am not sure why that started
happening. One thing I wanted to ask you is if your
system is on a home network at all. I have recently
added a wirless router and began sharing some of my
directories and printers to my two laptops and I wonder
if that is when the ASP.Net account was created. I know
I was not getting the Welcome screen after I had done
that. But I think it just showed up recently when I
download the recommended updates from Windows Update.
Any suggestions anyone?

Hi Mike,

While the account is just as you state, from the installation
of the .Net Framework v1.1, I have been lead to believe
that it being installed automatically in absence of an IIS
istall is an error that will be corrected. If this is indeed so,
then disabling/removing the account on a machine that does
not have IIS installed (includes all Home editions) is a
fully harmless action.

Do you have any information to the contrary ?
