To add to the post about running frontpage from.

The obvious answer (just came to me) is to use an asp host just for the web
forms.

Does anyone know of any good asp hosts based in the UK
Does anyknow of any to "aviod" ??

I have a long history of dealing with various web host companies. Here's my take:

When looking at web hosts that host on Microsoft servers, avoid like the plague any web
host that claims they cannot implement FrontPage extensions for, uh, "security reasons".
FP extension security is based on IIS security - they are either telling you that their
IIS security sucks, or they are lying and won't tell you they don't have the bare
technical expertise to manage FP extensions.

Also avoid them if either they won't support FP subwebs, or they do support subwebs but
they need you to place a support ticket

Make sure they do daily backups. Ask them how often they backup email and how long they
keep email backups (keeping email backups for one week is acceptable).

Lastly, make sure that the web host will allow you to submit tickets, and receive
replies, by EMAIL. One of the absolutely worst web hosting companies is Hostcentric.
Their policies are extreme CYA you can only submit tickets through their online system.
You get no email copy of your issue, it is all kept online. And they "purge" the support
history at infrequent and undocumented intervals, so you can't refer back to past
support issues.

BTW, a few years ago, I consulted for a company in the UK that insisted that their .com
website be hosted in the UK. We wound up having to host in the USA. We had a horrible
experience with XO Communications in the UK - they promised us services that they
suddenly couldn't support after they took our money.

...

excelent feedback - thanks.

I am an access programer but have (sort of) become the IT dept by default
and I'm really not too good at all with websites. I made one in frontpage as
it seemed the simplist to work with ( www.ukoutdoorpursuits.co.uk ).

But - I need to get feed back from one line forms into an access database
and the I can write some code that will get the data from Private/XXX.txt but
it seems quite hard to shell call to frontpage (turn on FP - log in - sync
the txt - close FP, on this ON Click in an access form). So I think I best
mov the forms to and host that can take ASP extentions.

Do you have recomendations for good hosts yu have dealt with ??

You can get a Windows Based web host anywhere, then you can use FP's database components and
Access.

CrystalTech at www.crystaltech.com is a professional-quality web host. They may not be
the cheapest, but they certainly are the absolute best. Their tech support is
first-rate. You can trust them.

Hi Thomas

Thanks for the feedback. The only reason that I asked about UK hosts was
that I like to have the option of telephoneing and if they are in the same
time zone it just make things a little eaiser. Some host only take contacts
by e mail and my skill level with front page is very low :-( so it's best if
I can talk to someone if there is a problem.

I have looked around on google and come up with a firm called asp host
http://www.asp-host.co.uk/
I will cal them on monday morning to discuss things. I will also call Pat's
suggestion
of Cystal tech
http://www.crystaltech.com/support.aspx
they are not in the UK but the say they have a 24/7 telephone number.

I will be using the criteria that Pat supplied to see if they are what we
need.

Many thanks once again
