Wilda,
In addition:
Follow Eric's advice, but set the icon to light arrow. (instead of no arrow). This helps you identify which is shortcut and which is not.
To 'remove' the arrow without TweakUI:
Open Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons
Backup the registry, using the procedure explained here.
In the right-pane of the Shell Icons key, create a new String value named "29".
Double-click 29 and set it's value to "C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,50" (which is an empty icon)
Close Registry Editor.
Right-click Desktop, choose Properties, Appearance Tab.
Click "Advanced" button, choose Icon from the drop-down list and set it's size to 32 and press OK.
If the value is already 32, just press OK, OK

Does anyone know how to remove the arrows that show up on
the icon when you make a shortcut on your desktop. On the
older version of tweak xp that was an option. Thanks
