Arial quotation marks

I'm not a new user but this seems like a basic question and I didn't know
where else to post it!

In Word 2000 I created a document in Arial. The straight quote marks came
out vertical as I have always seen them. I then submitted the document to
the Doc Control Dept and they stuck their header on, did a little redlining,
and returned a printout of the document to me. The quote marks changed to
angled marks (with the top part leaning right - definitely not curly). For
control reasons, they won't send me the electronic file to look at. However,
the supervisor opened their version of the document and said that the entire
document, including the quote marks are in Arial.

Soooo, what is making the difference in the look of the quote marks? Are
there different versions of Arial? Do printer drivers make a difference? The
typist did change the style of the paragraph from Normal to Body Text - but
I wouldn't think that would affect it.

TIA,
Vivian Carroll

Is this a difference in the printed output or just the screen display?
"Smart quotes" in Arial look straight at 100% Zoom, but if you zoom in, you
can see that they are in fact "curly." Some printers will substitute
"typeset-quality" single quotes for apostrophes in a document, but not
double quotes.

The printer driver could make a difference, and there might conceivably be a
difference in the version of Arial installed on the respective machines.

Thank you Suzanne.

Today I got the supervisor to send me the electronic version of just the
problem paragraph (where the word processor somehow managed to change my
straight quote marks to angled ones). It appeared on screen and in print as
angled quotes.

It turns out the word processor replaced the Arial quotes with Symbol font
quotes (at least that is what it appears happened - we haven't actually
asked the word processor yet for a variety of reasons). When the quote marks
alone are selected, the font box on the toolbar reflects Arial. However,
when I select Insert, Symbol, the Insert Symbol dialog opens with the
Symbol font selected and the 6th down, 7th across symbol selected (angled
quote marks).

Sooooo, mystery solved. (Except we have to find out why on earth the word
processor went to the trouble to replace arial quotes with symbols!)

I'm sorry to have troubled you. Thank you for your help.

Vivian
