I have come across another problem when I try to import
the file it is saying that one or more parameter values
are not valid. What does that mean and where can I get
info on how to correct it.

Thanks Again
Caroline

When you connect to the file by using File-> Open-> Outlook Data File are
you able to drag & drop messages to the folder you want?

I read in your previous post that you are talking about a back-up that you
are testing. If you use import then the messages will be listed twice. Also
note that you must remove the "Read Only" file property after you copied the
pst-file back to your harddisk.

Hi Roady

Well its like this. I backed up all my outlook files to
CD before someone reformatted my machine. Now I can't
retrieve the folders from the CD. I have taken off the
Read only once copied to the hard drive, ran scanexe and
done what was suggested earlier by Milly but I still
havn't managed to recover my files. Am I missing
something obvious, or perhaps not so obvious.

What outlook files are you talking about? You mention retrieving
*folders* from the CD. Outlook doesn't use folders. It uses a .pst
file (and some other *files* for configuration but the .pst file is the
important one).

How big is the .pst file? If its only a few kilobytes then my guess is
that you forgot to include subfolders (within the PST information store
file) and all you have is the folder currently selected when you did the
export. Or did you actually close Outlook and copy the .pst file itself
(rather than use File->Export in Outlook)?

You mention scanexe. Scanexe? Did you mean scanpst.exe (Inbox repair
tool)? Does scanpst.exe report any error in the .pst file? If the .pst
file is over 2GB (1.82 GB) in size, Outlook will have problems using it.
You may end up having to use Microsoft's PST2GB.exe utility to truncate
the file.

If the .pst file was copied back off the backup CD and onto your hard
drive, and after removing the read-only attribute, do you actually have
permissions to that file (and the directory where you copied it)? The
directory might give you Create privilege but not Read privilege. This
is only relevant if you are using NT-based Windows and using NTFS.

Rather than import the items from the .pst file, open the .pst file
separately. Go to File -> Open and point to your old .pst file (which
must not be read-only). This will open a new tree in the List view
pane. You can then check if you can even get into the folders contained
within that old information store. If so then just highlight (Ctrl-A)
and drag from the old information store to your new one.
