Please help to indentify these files:

CowB51P.exe
RmtPCB55.exe
nopdb.exe
Hoz3.exe

WinXP Home Edition
I just ran Adaware and Spypot lastest versions.

Thanks in advance,

Dat Tieu

Dat Tieu:
nopdb.exe is associated with Norton Speed Disk.

Can't find any info on the others. Have you scanned for viruses? Do these
files run automatically when Windows starts? If so, you may be able to
identify them by running msconfig and checking the list of startup items. To
do this, click Start>Run, type "msconfig" (no quotes), click OK. In the
System Configuration Utility window, click the Startup tab. Go through the
list to see if any of these files are listed. This may give you a clue as to
which program (if any) these files are associated with. Are these files
located in program folders? The location of these files may give a clue as
to their purpose. For example, I would expect to find the nopdb.exe file in
the Norton Speed Disk program folder. Have a look at these things and post
back with the results.

I did the msconfig. I didn't see any listed files. I do have Norton Speed
Disk installed. I scanned my system yesterday with Norton in safe mode. It
found and removed some trojans/viruses (bookmarker.F, ByteVerify,
PWsteal...)

I have a TCPviewer which shows the computer tries to connect to some
IPs/sites. There must be something that Spybot/Adaware couldn't remove. I am
going to scan the whole system again and post back here after that. Thanks.

Do you have a firewall installed? If not, you may want to install one (I
recommend Zone Alarm). This will give you the opportunity to see if any of
these files are trying to connect to the internet and may give you another
clue as to what they are. You can deny permission until or if you decide
that it is safe to allow these connections.

I am in the process of reinstalling the computer. This is not my computer. I
am fixing it for a friend.

I personally don't use Firewall but I think Firewall is a good thing. Is
zone Alarm free? I heard about it but never tried it..

I'm sorry I don't have any help for you, but can you tell me, what is
TCPviewer, and where can I get it?

Thanks,
Bruce

No these are not XP processes. Norton Speed Disk does quite the oposite in XP. I defrags and causes excessive system slowdown because of it. The defrag in XP is the best for the OS. I also use the XP firewall without any problems and find it adequate for the task. I have tried a couple of free ones but then when going to independent test sites I have found that they perform worse than XP's own. In short. XP has about 100 tools that you can use and most are better than third party ones as they are specifically for XP. The only good thing from Nortons these days is their Anti-virus. good luck.
