Are there any 3rd party mouse drivers?

I have a kensington mouse which has an awesome driver that allows
programming of virtually any action to any button as well as some support
for chording (programming events when 2 buttons are pressed simultaneously)
and individual application settings. I really love these features but I'd
like to switch to a more comfortable mouse. Is there any third party driver
(Windows XP) or application that provide these features generically to any
mouse? I'd be willing to pay for such a thing if someone knows of a
commercial program. But I've not been able to find a really good application
like this yet.

Thanks,
Ric

Hello Ric:

I have used the below driver on a lot of different mouses. The
mouse driver/software has never complained that the mouse is not one of
the supported models.

Don't know what options your current driver/software has? Give this
driver/software a try and let us know what you think. You can assign
buttons for different functions.

If anyone finds a mouse that this driver/software does not work on let us
know.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I've never seen those mice before. Have you
ever used one? Any good?

Thanks,

It sorta works... While the driver lets me move the mouse cursor with my
Kensington mouse, any rapid or sweeping movement of the mouse causes the
cursor to jump and/or move in the opposite direction. Therefore the mouse
needs to be moved slowly and deliberately, making it not very useable. Worst
is that there doesn't appear to be any acceleration features.

Also, the feature set comes very short compared to the Kensington drivers
I'm using. There is no support for programming actions when 2 buttons are
pressed simultaneously (Kensington is the only one I know of that supports
this) and there is no support for application specific settings (Kensington
and Microsoft Intellipoint support this, although from what I understand the
latest version of Intellipoint loses this ability, which in my opinion is a
huge step backwards). It also doesn't appear to allow user-defined
programming of any keyboard sequence, which Kensington and Intellipoint
support.

I think this driver is about as good as the Logitech drivers, but not what
I'm looking for. I think I'm going to have to stick with the Kensington
hardware as they're the only ones who make what I consider a really good
mouse driver, with Microsoft coming in at a closer second.

I have never had that kind of problem? Could be a Kensington mouse
thing?

All you can do is try.

Could be. I found a program called Girder which I think will let me do what
I want. It has a bit of a steep learning curve, though, but hopefully I'll
be able to figure it out over time. And it is freeware, if anyone else is
interested. It was conceived for programming TV tuner remote controls but
seems to be a fairly powerful macro program that is extensible for different
input devices.

Thanks for your suggestion, though.
