I have two ibm thinkpads, one of which has w2kp 1-2cpu and
ntwrkstn4.0 product id numbers on the same sticker. i have
a ibm factory restore cd with w2k -still wondering about
the nt4.0 but not yet-have had continual problems with
both the thinkpad that has the disk and the one that i
installed from the one w/disk.

If i create start-up disks to re-install w2k will they
carry problems with them or is the information somewhere
that could not be changed inadvertently by me or
maliciously by others---and/or--can i download a start up
disk using my product key

No such thing. Either they work or they don't work. To do a clean install,
either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four
install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the
\bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or
makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

i do not have a w2k cd--only a ibm factory restore cd
which is auto-loading & also contains LOTS of ibm thinkpad
programs/files-am trying to find info there as well--

If all you have is a restore CD-Rom then you don't have any choice. Check
your documentation on how to use your restore CD-Rom.

If the \Recovery\ folder in your IBM W2K restore CD
contains Loaddskf.exe and four <filenames>.dsk files size
~1440kB each, then you can apply Loaddskf.exe to each .dsk
file in its turn to create the corresponding four W2K boot
diskettes.

In a Command Prompt :
<CD Drive Letter>\Recovery\Loaddskf.exe to see the command
line syntax of this application.

Loaddskf.exe is an IBM-owned utility to create disk images.
