Are IE security updates lost?

I recently had to re-install my IE, and although it has solved most of the
problems, I still have a few minor ones. Will I have to re-download the IE
security updates that I have received during the past couple of months, or
were they retained upon re-installation?

Visit Windows Update and find out.

I have been to Windows update. It tells me no High Priority updates are
available, but the only time that IE has crashed since the re-install, the
link that MS provided for me to follow for a solution took me to a download
that I already received a couple of months ago, KB883939, from MS05-025,
which I distinctly remember downloading last month, but that download is no
longer listed in my download history at update, while the download of the
same file by auto-update a month and a half earlier is. Therefore, I am a
little confused. MS sends me to get a fix that I know I manually downloaded,
but it is no longer in my history as a manual download but is as an
auto-update. How can I find out for sure? Will it do any harm If I download
it if I don't really need it? I'l just wait here and hope someone can clear
up the haze. Thanks for the input.

Well, one thing you can do is check your Add/Remove programs. There is a
button at the top of the page that you can select to show all updates. You
can get an idea of what updates you have from that list.

Another place you can check is from your IE toolbar>about IE> all your
updates are listed there, as well...

When you reinstalled IE, did you use a script, or did you reinstall IE via
reinstalling XP?

You can also do a search for that file, and you can check your Windows
Update log file.

Ok, let's try to do this step by step. I re-installed IE by using
Start>Run>C:\Windows\inf...and so on. I checked Add/Remove programs, and it
is the same there as it is at the Windows Update site in my download history,
i.e., the update that MS sent me to get today when IE crashed (KB883939) is
listed as being installed back in June, but not in Sept, when I KNOW I
installed it manually after several IE crashes. The Windows Update site
install history lists the June installation as an automatic update. Last
week, at the peak of my troubles with IE, the update site install history
also listed the manual download of that update that I made in Sept, but it IS
NOT listed there now, just the auto in June. When I go into IE
Toolbar>Help>About IE, the only thing listed after update versions is "SP 2".
So what I guess I need to know is if the auto install of KB83939 back in
June (that is listed in my Add/Remove and Windows install history) is still
active and doing it's job since the re-install seems to have wiped the later
manual install of the same file, or should I download that update again? (And
if I do, should I uninstall or remove the previous one first?) Thanks for
your time.

From what I understand about updates, if you are being asked, or offered an
update that you already have, for whatever reason, the prior update has not
been, or is no longer registered correctly, and, as Windows will only offer
updates that your computer is ready to receive, then, if it were my
computer, I'd go ahead and reinstall, without uninstalling. Uninstalling
can have it's drawbacks, if not done in the proper order. And, as far as I
can tell, there will be no consequences. BUT, as I'm not a paid computer
tech, I'd only have myself to blame.

What you say seems to make as much sense to me as anything else I've been
able to get so far. I was not really asked to update, or offered an update,
but since MS directed me to an update (that I already have) as a step to
correct a problem that it has determined from an error report generated from
my computer, I will take that to mean that I should go ahead and download the
thing again. I'm not a paid computer tech either, but the last thing I would
do is blame you for me following your good intentioned suggestions. After
all, it's only a computer, and if I screw it up too badly, I can just wipe it
clean and start the whole thing over again. That's good practice in case I
WANT to become a paid computer tech. Thanks a lot for your input. I will go
ahead and perform the download again, and take it from there. If I run into
any more problems, I'll be back, but I promise it won't be to yell at you.
Take care.

Okay, sounds good. But it would be nice if you posted the results so that
if anyone has the same thing happen, they will benefit from your work.

Ok. I went ahead and downloaded and installed KB883939, and while I was at
it, I downloaded and installed KB8890923, which I didn't have as yet. The
machine didn't blow up or anything, so I guess that's a good start. Since I
hadn't had any problems since the re-install of IE until yesterday (which was
probably my fault, as I had about 5 windows open and gave a few conflicting
commands in one of them) I can't really say anything about the results at
this time. So far today, though, everything seems to be working normally.
Something that seems odd to me in light of our previous exchanges is the fact
that neither of these updates has shown up in my Add/Remove programs,
Microsoft Update history, or the About IE information. As the Install Wizard
told me that they had both been successfully installed, I'm going to assume
that they were, and quit messing around with it for the time being, and wait
to see if I have any more problems. Thanks for your help, and I will re-post
here in a couple of days to report more on the results of this adventure.

Ok, it's been almost a week now, and everything seems to be running normally.
The problem seems to be gone, and I haven't noticed any irregularities that
might be attributed to downloading something that I was pretty sure I had
already downloaded in the past. Thanks for your help, everyone.
