I have set up archive.pst files by year, and have manually archived my
personal folders using the older than date. The messages have been properly
moved into the archive folder/file and are no longer visible in the personal
folders. My intention is to move the archive.pst files to a CD-R to conserve
C drive space. However, checking the file size in Windows explorer, the
filesize for the outlook.pst file hasn't gotten any smaller. Are there some
settings I'm missing?
TIA for any help.

Compact takes a ridiculously long time. Seems to me there should be a
quicker way. I guess to archive the whole pst file then delete the pst and
import the archive folder with the current messages would be a way to do it
more quickly. Sort of round-about, but it should work.

And one other thing,
I can rename The file ok, but renaming the folder in the folders view list
won't work . The name reverts back to plain Archive Folders for all of them.
Any suggestions as to how to get the folder name to stick?

Yes, renaming the archive FILE is fine, it's the name in the folders list
that can't be changed permanently, so I now have 4 ARCHIVE FOLDERS listed in
the folder list instead of the names Archive Folders 2000, 2001, 2002 etc

You did rename eg Archive2000.pst, Archive2001.pst etc?
Did you close all the archive pst's in OL prior to renaming, then in OL
File/Open/pst
Works for me.

Yes, The filenames were named accordingly. To chznge the folder names in the
folder list, I right clicked it, clicked on properties, Advanced, then
changed the name. The new name then showed up in the folder list, but went
back to the generic name (Archive Folders) the next time Outlook was
started.

In OL close the pst you wish to rename, close OL. Then in explorer locate and
rename pst.
Start OL, File/Open/pst.... browse to renamed pst. ie renaming within OL
doesnt work.

You keep refering to the file name!!! I can change the filename perfectly
fine, it is the FOLDER name I want to change.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!
When you are IN outlook, the archive folder has a name typically Archive
Folder,. That name has nothing at all to do with the FILENAME!!!
You sure are dense!!!

You might want to check on that!!!
The default Archive Folder name AND thus File name is Archive(.pst)
It has everything to do with the archive file name
