Archiving Messages

I'm wanting to archive folders with many messages in them, to cut down on
the overhead (and database size) of Windows Mail, as I'd done with Outlook
Express. Not automatic archiving, but just when I want to. I don't see any
built-in provision for that.

Now, I know (found out the /hard/ way) where the WM messages and folders are
kept, and assume I could, without WM running, simply /move/ the folder(s)
I'd like to archive to another location. If I do that:

1) Do I need to do anything special, so that WM doesn't look for the
folders? (I assume they'd be in a database somewhere.)

2) To view them again, would I then just copy them back to the Local Folders
folder? And would I need to do anything so that WM would read them again?
(like Reindex mail)

3) Is there a better method to copy/move the messages to another location,
so that the message Subject, and preferably date, would show up (in the
non-WM location)? The alphanumeric WM title is not useable, obviously.

Thanks in advance for any help.
