I would like to save my messages (folders) on a yearly basis and had hoped
that there would be an archiving setting to do what I wish to do but, unless
I've missed something, it doesn't seem possible so I'm wondering if I am
missing something or, perhaps, I'm the only person on the planet who thinks
this would be a good idea.

To make sure this is clear, the idea would be that I'd have a folder or PST
which would be "pre" 2006 which would have everything up to this year.
Then, I'd save this year as 2006 and start on 2007 with all my folders still
there BUT empty.

Is there a simple way to do this or to I have to physically move all the
messages from the current folders to the archived ones?

Archiving works on intervals since the current date, not absolute dates. On
January 1, 2007, for example, you can't have autoarchive simply archive
everything from the past year, unless you set the archive interval to be one
day. Just remember that archiving works on the modified dates of items, not
the received or created dates. So, any item modified more recently than the
archive interval will not be archived. I have found it simple enough just
to move the prior year's data to another PST manually.
