Yes a nice one. Don't know about highest compression ratio, but I do
know that quite a few in this group like it. Else it would not have
ended up on the Pricelessware list.
Have a look: <http://www.pricelessware.org/>.

At the Sourceforge page, I see ver. 3.12 (W9X) as a no-install zip, but
the latest ver. 3.13 has only the install exe version.

Location for ver. 3.13 as a zip file?

Hi Mike,

I don't think one exists. 3.13 was released *one* day after 3.12 -
note on author's site about 3.13 says "small bug fixes". Maybe try 3.12
and see if it works okay for you?

Thanks, Susan.

After I d/l 3.12, it turns out the zip version is not the GUI version,
it's a DOS commandline version, not what I wanted. They should have
noted something to that effect.

Source Forge seems to have a standard set of info they furnish with DL
links. The author's DL page *does* tell you it's command line:

http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

<q>
Mirrors for downloading 7-Zip and additional packages can be accessed
from Source Forge site:

7-Zip's Source Forge Page

Additional packages contain:

* Source code of 7-Zip.
* Standalone command line version of 7-Zip that doesn't require
installation and works in Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP and in Linux via
Wine program.
* 7z Library for developers.

</q>

It doesn't have the highest compression ratio for any specific type of
data, but it scores very well in general. Also, I haven't seen a program
that has (consistant) better compression for standard ZIP archives.

There are exceptions to every rule.

The only thing against 7zip is that it isn't proven yet and as such
adoption of it isn't great. That'll come soon enough probably.

Cousin JanC ....

Do you have a feel for how 7-zip compares compression-wise
with the zlib compression module in Python23 that is based on GNU zip ????

Using zip-format 7-Zip seems to be a little better in my tests.
(I used zipfile.py to create .zip files in Python)

Using 7z-format it will compress clearly better almost all the time.

A .png is already compressed, and you have to add the archive header with
the filename, etc. to that...
