Hi there, I'm Jesus from Venezuela. At the first point, excuse my poor English. I'm not a wise with Windows 2000, but I know the minimum to do my job. We have a net using Windows 2000 Server running at a clone 2 XEON processors 1Gb Ram, 2 mirror disks 18 Gb. each. In addition we have 25 clients. The server administrator never creates a domain, all the people is connected as a Workgroup. Last Friday a lady who usually makes backup of banking and administration, accidentally erased all the folder containing the information. The information erased was in a shared folder in the server. My question is: Can we activate some security in order to prevent this kind of accidents? Can I recover the information? I tried to find it on the garbage trash (both, the mine and the servers), and I find nothing.

Can anybody help me or drive me? Thanks in advance,

Jesus Aguilera

First off if you need that data, immediately pull that server offline and use a third party recovery program to try and recover the needed files. In W2K files are not really deleted but there names are erases from the file allocation table.

http://www.snapfiles.com/shareware/system/swdatarecovery.html -- links to such programs. File scavenger is supposed to work well and they have free limited size recovery trial version.

You need to have a backup system in place. Even the built in NTbackup works well and you can schedule backups for daily, etc.

The person doing the backups does not need modify permissions to the share and if they have the user right to backup files and directories, they don't need any permissions to the folder as explained in the link below.
