Archive not working

I'm trying to clean up my mailbox. But File/Archive doesn't do anything.

I set it to archive messages older than 11/1/2003 (about 2 months old).
But I still have many messages going back to 2001.

These messages have a modified date that is the same or very close to the
sent and received dates.

Why isn't this working?

This is in OL 2k3.

Thanks, Frank

Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you but I had the same problem when
I moved to Outlook 2003. Eventually, as time went on, newer items began to
archive properly, but the old ones still sat there. I eventually moved or
deleted those items manually. Never did find out what caused the problem...

I think you're right about the fact that newer items do archive
properly.

I went through my folders and manually moved all older items to the
archive folders. We'll see what happens over time.

However, I have another question. I did the archiving because I noticed
that OL was using over 70mb of RAM. But after moving 90% of my old
stuff to the archive folder, it's still using over 50mb.

Do I have to do something to compress the folders or does this happen
over time?

Thanks, Frank

Automatic compaction should occur in the background if you leave Outlook
running for a while, but only if you have at least 16KB of whitespace in the
..PST file. The following MSKB article elaborates on this and tells you how
to manually compact the .PST if you so desire:
