I set a manual archive in outlook, which will move the mail before the date I
set to the archive folder. after archiving was finished, these mail still
existed in the original folder. How do I solve this problem?

Check the Modified date on the items that aren't being archived as you think
they should. That's the date Outlook uses to determine whether or not an
item is ready to be archived, and a simple action such as moving the item to
another folder can change the Modified date. More information and a list of
actions that change the Modified date can be found here:

I have the same problem, and I found out that the modified date shown is
"none".
Is there oher anyway that I can archive based on the received date?

Archive will use the most recent of created, received, and modified, so if
there's no modified date, I imagine it would use the receive date.

Did you ever get a solution to your problem? I moved my PST from one
computer to another and now have items in my Inbox that should be archived.

If you did get an answer, I would love it if you could share it with me.

thanks

Did you check the modified date on those items to see if Outlook and you
both agree on when the items should be archived?

I've been following this discussion and have looked at my "modified date" and
it is, indeed, the problem. So.. my question is, can we force Outlook to to
work off of the "received date"?

Thanks

I think all of our modification dates changed when we installed Office 2007
because, even though an email may have been sent/received in 2007 and I want
to archive everything before 4/1/08, they are not being archived. I checked
the mod date and all of them are 7/15/08 which is when I believe we went to
2007. So, anyone know how we can fix this?? Thanks.

Did you , by chance, is Import? If so, that's the reason for why you see
the modification date you do. Import changes the received date to the date
of import. There is no way to undo that. If you want to correct the
problem and you have NOT received any more mail since then, you can go back
and reuse the original PST from which you imported, rather than importing
anything.

I was not here then, but I doubt they imported -- just installed Office 2007.
And yes, we have received mail since the install date of 7/15/08. What does
PST stand for?

PST stands for "Personal STorage" and references a Personal Folders file.

<nothing>

Why post nothing more than a quote of someone else's message?

My fault. My first time to post and I clicked before I typed.

I have two questions. First, what are some workarounds that others have
found useful? I just implemented Office 2007 and have 600MB of legacy email
that I cannot archive due to the limitation discussed in this thread. Second,
I use cached mode with MS Exchange and access my mail from more than one PC
and from a Blackberry. Will the last modified date of the mail in my folders
constantly change because of these multiple access methods? In other words,
will the modified date change each time I refresh the .ost file on my PC?

Larry, I never saw any reply to the problem of old emails no longer being
considered with their RECEIVED/SENT date when they need to be archived. How
do I stop OUTLOOK from using the LAST MODIFIED date? Am using OUTLOOK 2007
(SP2) and my OUTLOOK.pst has now grown to 11GB. I know the limit is 20GB but
it might get to this before the LAST MODIFIED date on all my old stuff
reaches 9 mths and I do not want to reduce the 9mth limit because that will
then affect my current stuff.

Second problem: From what I can see in OUTLOOK 2007
Subfolders do not automatically adopt the archiving rule of the parent
folder, and the default on subfolders is set at DO NOT ARCHIVE which is the
rule they will pick up when a subfolder is created. Sorry to say that I see
this as a failure of the MS programmers to have thought this through properly.

Hv now been through about 300-400 subfolders in my active email folder and
individually set an archiving rule for each subfolder (a real pain!). Problem
is that even though some of these emails are as much as 11 yrs old they will
not archive since I IMPORTED them into my current pst file and they will have
picked up a recent LAST MODIFIED date.

By the way, I did not use the MS PST repair program because that crops the
folder and it then loses data. FYI I found an excellent program from Stellar
Phoenix which will handle almost any size of *.pst (but it takes a few
hours!).

any ideas?

You can't. Outlook has always used the modified date for determining
archiving. It can't be changed.

There's nothing special about subfolders. They inherit NOTHING from their
"parents" because there really isn't any parent of an Outlook folder. The
hierarchical structure you see in Outlook is simply a convenience of
presentation. When you create a new folder, no matter where you create it or
at what level, I believe it will have the Do Not Archive attribute.

Never import from a PST. There's no need and you will lose or change the data
being imported.
