My IBM Aptiva is almost 5 years old and I have never replaced the
battery. How long should I expect the original battery to last? What
are the symptoms when it starts to fail?

I should think it's nearing it's life span, but I wouldn't worry while it
still works.
Initial signs of failure are that it will be fully charged, but the number
of hours use you get is dropping.

When it gets bad, it won't hold charge for more than 40 - 60 mins, and when
it's absolutely dead it won't hold charge at all.. (you can charge
overnight, and still it won't run off battery for more than 5 mins)

As far as I know all Aptiva's were desktop/tower models. If your talking
about the cmos battery then one of the symptoms will be losing the correct
date and time when the system has been powered off :-)
