If you've installed a service pack, the latest version should be in
\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386 and earlier versions in
\WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$. If there's more than one earlier
version, the older ones have numeric suffixes appended to the file name.
Gary, thanks for the info. After the upgrade process, the
links to the applet were non-functional. I couldn't
locate the file to replace it, so I copied the appwiz.cpl
from my Win98SE files to replace it, and I lost the newer
functionality that the W2K version has.
The file version in the location you refer to will not
execute (version 5.00.2195.6624), nor will the previous
version (5.00.2134.1) located in the
<C:\WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$> folder. The only one
to execute is the Win98SE version.
I'm suprised that the Win98 version executes. The 5.0.2195.6624 version
is the SP4 version. If that doesn't work, I think you have more problems
than just appwiz.cpl. Any version that doesn't begin with 5.0.2195 would
not be a Win2K version. My previous version was 5.0.2195.6157, but I
suspect that wouldn't work for you either under the present conditions.
It's in the I386 folder on the install CD under the name APPWIZ.CP_. The
file is compressed; you'll need to expand it using the command line expand
tool. I'd rename the existing file before doing so.
