Apps only open using "Run As"

I have a client that was applying a service pack to an XP
Pro machine and it rebooted without warning. I was able
to go back and restore it to a restore point from about
20 days before this happened. Now the only way to get
applications to open is to right click on the icon
and "Run As". It does not matter which user that you
choose to "run as", the applications open. But it always
takes almost a minute for any program to open this way.
We have tried reapplying the service pack and even
rolling it back to an earlier restore point but to no
avail. I would reload it from scratch except it has a
very sensitive set up using VMware and several other
touchy apps. Any suggestions?
TIA.

Is there an open there as well.

IF SO
Type regedit in Start Run
Navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell
and delete the default value (which will be runas). Do NOT delete the subkey of the same name.

IF NOT
Type regedit in Start Run
Navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell
[it get different from here]
Edit menu - New - Key
name it open
select the key open
Edit menu - New - Key
name it command
select the key command then double click (default) in the other pane
enter exactly
"%1" %*
if you get confused runas has an identical command.

I can't remember if it still has Open in the menu or not.
I will definitely give this a shot and hopefully it will
resolve the issue. Thanks for the quick response!

There's a spate of this issue lately, making me think that a program, update, spyware, or virus is causing it.

David, the regedit worked like a charm, thanks again for
the quick response and the info. I figured it was a
registry issue, just wasn't exactly sure where to look.
Thanks Again,
BC
