A Windows 2000 user gets the following message on boot
and before there is a logon screen "applying security
policy" and gets stuck at that point.

Safe mode with networking and last known good also relect
the same problem. Any ideas, any body???

Thanks

Try doing it with the network cable unplugged. If that works look in Event Viewer for
any clues and run diskcheck and virus scan on the machine. If nothing comes of that,
assuming you were able to logon without network connection, plug network cable back
in and run netdiag on the machine looking for failed tests that may help pinpoint
problem. You may need to attempt a repair installation if nothing helps. --- Steve

Thank you for your response and your suggestions. We had
actually disconnected the network cable and tried without
luck. You see, the system is not in a Windows 2000
(Active Directory) domain so we were not sure where/why
the message came up.

We got into the system by holding down the Shift Key as
Windows booted into Safe Mode and disabled the SAM
service.

Thanks a bunch once more. We will now try to diagnose the
source of the problem.
