Applying ICS gives error 2 - file missing....

I have worked with ICS for years on several setups. But
this one I can't fix - anyone out there that can?

- Have created a dialup connection that uses ISDN
- In the properties of the TCP/IP on the advanced tab, I
enable ICS and press apply. After a few seconds I receive
(something like) this message: "Cannot enable shared
access. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified."
- There is no entry in the Event log
- It used to work in this setup - but now I get this error

Any ideas?

/LPJ

We don't know exactly what causes this error. The only advice I have is to
make sure the private side adapter is enabled and has an IP address before
enabling ICS.

Thanks Ken.

But I am afrait, that I already did that - and it still
doesn't work.

An idea:

The user told me, that about the same time ICS stopped
working the user installed ad-aware 6.0. Could it be,
that it quarantined the file that is missing?

If the error message is correct; Does anyone know witch
files are needed for ICS?

Well I wouldn't put anything past adaware. I doubt the error message really
applies to a physical file, error 2 often means "something" not found.

Does "ipconfig /renew" work correctly?

No, "ipconfig /renew" does not work. Does this help?

Another possible reason is, that the user also used the
Microsoft program Bootvis v1.0.0.1 about the same...

Does ipconfig /renew also give error 2?

Run "winmsd" and go to Components/Network/Protocol. Do you see entries for
the following:

MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]
MSAFD Tcpip [RAW/IP]

I am having a similar problem - except I can't seem to add
protocols/services/clients without getting that error. When running winmsd,
I show NOTHING under Protocol, Adapter or WinSock, even though the entire
networking subsystem was running just fine two days ago. I've searched the
web and tried all the tricks and tips I could find and I'm still right at
the same place. Very frustrating.

I have worked with ICS for years on several setups.
But
this one I can't fix - anyone out there that can?

- Have created a dialup connection that uses ISDN
- In the properties of the TCP/IP on the advanced
tab,
I
enable ICS and press apply. After a few
seconds
I
receive
(something like) this message: "Cannot enable
shared
access. Error 2: The system cannot find the file
specified."
- There is no entry in the Event log
- It used to work in this setup - but now I get
this
error

Any ideas?

Well I'm running a little low on ideas.

Have you tried typing "sfc /scannow" to make sure a file isn't really
missing?

I have tried:
- looking for help on the internet
- reinstalling sp1
- downloading and installing sp1a-DK
- moved sp1a-DK to local drive and reinstalling sp1a
- copying sp1a-DK to a CD (might have wrong Volume label)
and each time changing registry accordingly, but sfc
persists on stating that it can't find the files or the
CD is the wrong one.

The path I used in registry that locates sp1a is:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVers
ion\Setup], "ServicePackSourcePath"

I tried the following:
-Reinstalling SP1
-Downloading and installing SP1a
-Look for help on the internet
-Create a CD with SP1a and reinstalling from there

For each attempt I have set the registry setting

it insists, that it can't find the files.

I am afrait that this is a dead end as well, if I can't

Hi all,

I am also suffering exactly the same problem with the ICS. Same error, and
after reading your posts the same problem after reinstallation of SP1 (even
tried to SP1a). The weird thing is that I had ICS working a while ago (used
it for sharing games across blizzards bnet) and unfortunately did not keep
track of software changes - and then nothing. I am at the stage where a
complete reinstall of Xp may be the only option!

Just thought I would add my thoughts
Cheers
Rob

P.S I am using a proxy and manually assigned IP's to share the connection
fine (except for internt games!)

LPJ said:
I tried the following:
-Reinstalling SP1
-Downloading and installing SP1a
-Look for help on the internet
-Create a CD with SP1a and reinstalling from there

For each attempt I have set the registry setting
accordingly
([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer
sion\Setup],"ServicePackSourcePath"). But SFC don't care,
it insists, that it can't find the files.

I am afrait that this is a dead end as well, if I can't
get SFC to read SP1 files :-(

SFC is a bit out of my expertise. Would it be easier just to reapply SP1?

I'd be interested in seeing the list of missing files if you could post it.

Hi Ken,

Lots of files appear to be missing using sfc. However I
am unable to fix it since sfc stops and states that it
can't finde the installationpath for WinXP SP1 and there
is no browse option. The files are placed on the users
network. I have tried looking for the path in the
registry with no luck (did find the path for WinXP
itself). Could you help here as well?

-----Original Message-----
Well I'm running a little low on ideas.

Have you tried typing "sfc /scannow" to make sure a file
isn't really
missing?

Yes - it works perfectly.

1) ipconfig /renew gives a reply like this: "Did not

different in English)

2) Not quite, I got these:

Does ipconfig /renew also give error 2?

Run "winmsd" and go to Components/Network/Protocol.
Do
you see entries for
the following:

MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]
MSAFD Tcpip [RAW/IP]

No, "ipconfig /renew" does not work. Does this
help?

Another possible reason is, that the user also
used
the
Microsoft program Bootvis v1.0.0.1 about the
same...

/LPJ

-----Original Message-----
Well I wouldn't put anything past adaware. I
doubt
the
error message really
applies to a physical file, error 2 often
means "something" not found.

Does "ipconfig /renew" work correctly?

An idea:

The user told me, that about the same time ICS
stopped
working the user installed ad-aware 6.0.
Could it
be,
that it quarantined the file that is missing?

If the error message is correct; Does anyone
know
witch
files are needed for ICS?

But I am afrait, that I already did that -

it

We don't know exactly what causes this

The
only
advice I have is to
make sure the private side adapter is
enabled

has
an
IP address before
enabling ICS.

I have worked with ICS for years on
several
setups.
But
this one I can't fix - anyone out there
that
can?

- Have created a dialup connection that
uses
ISDN
- In the properties of the TCP/IP on the
advanced
tab,
I
enable ICS and press apply. After a few
seconds
I
receive
(something like) this message: "Cannot

- There is no entry in the Event log

I

Any ideas?

I would personally be very interested, but I have to ask
the firm/user if they will allow remote assistance on
there network...

/LPJ
-----Original Message-----
I might be able to debug this via Remote Assistance if one of you would be
willing. I usually don't try to debug ICS over the net because the network
changes can result in me losing the connection but it might be worth a shot
in this case. Send mail to (e-mail address removed) if you would be
interested.

ICS error 2

I had that problem, also i couldn't enter Firewall settings, the window just didn't show up, and Advanced tab check boxes in connections properties wasn't saved.

I figured out that reason of ICS error 2 in my case was that DHCP-client service isn't running.

Then i downloaded and used Dial-a-fix > Tools > Reinstall Windows Firewall, Reinstall WMI/WBEM - that solved remaining problems.
