This is happening more and more frequently on machines in my domain.

All PC's are set to autoconfig IP addresses and DNS. DNS is functioning
properly.

Boot up is slow and afterwards the hard drive keeps on crunching.

Is there any tool we can purchase or freeware that can monitor the boot
process of the PC and tell me what it is doing during the different stages of
the Boot process.

Thanks for any help

Verify that they are using ONLY domain controllers that are running DNS and
have the DNS zone or can resolve to it in their listed DNS servers and never
and ISP DNS servers. You can run the support tools netdiag on both the
domain controllers and domain computers to check for network connectivity,
DNS, and domain related issues and the support tool dcdiag on the domain
controllers to run further tests that check for replication and that the
needed services are running. Also check the logs via Event Viewer on the
domain controllers and a couple domain computers having the problem to see
if anything is found such as userenv errors on the domain workstations. If
ipsec is enabled in the domain and special considerations are not given for
access to domain controllers from domain workstations that can also cause a
big problem. Netdiag will show if an ipsec policy is assigned. I would also
verify that the sysvol share is available on the domain controllers from a
domain computer. You should be able to see it and navigate through it in My
Network Places down to the registry.pol files while logged onto a domain
computer or from the run box as in \\dcname\sysvol using the real dcname of
course. --- Steve
