Hello:

When I have try to installing MS03-042 patch, the patch will execute to
the end without error. But after clicking the "Finish" button, two
processes were stuck in the background: update.exe and the patch process
(e.g. W2KSP3-KB826232.EXE). On workstation, the update.exe process will
consume 99% of the CPU usage, while on the server, the process consume
around 25% of the CPU usage.

Only by terminating the update.exe manually through Task Manager, would
the script continue to the next patch. MS03-043 also produced this same
unexpected behaviour. However, for the other three patches, MS03-041,
044 and 045, they executed nicely without such issue. I have also
tested installing the 042 and 043 manually (traditional method), but
still observed the unexpected behaviour. Checking the Add/Remove
Programs list, showed the two entries there.

Does any security config that I need to check?

Thanks!

Hi Alan,

The fixed version of update.exe that does NOT cause high CPU% is 5.4.1.0.
Microsoft is not re-packaging any of the existing patches or hotfixes with
the new update, only new patches that are built on or after 10/08/03.

To verify a patch build date, open up the patch's update.inf. If you look
near the bottom of the update.inf file, you¡¦ll see an entry that matches
the example below:
[Strings]

BUILDTIMESTAMP=20031001.165925

¡Kthis indicates when the package was built. In this case 20031001 means
10/01/2003.

You can manually copy the updated files into an existing patch to make it
work. For an existing patch, extract it and open up the update folder. You
will leave the inf alone, and replace the files:

update.exe
spuninst.exe
spcustom.dll

Then the patch should install fine with no problems.
