To what extent do Outlook Express, IE, and Outlook use WindowsXP Messenger.
When I try to close WM it tells me that I have to close these applications
before I can close WM.
If I make it so WM doesn't run will any of those apps be prevented from
running or running properly (if so, how?)

Greetings,

Outlook Express uses Windows Messenger in the "Contacts" pane of it's main interface, to
disable this, close Outlook Express, then download and run this .reg file:

Outlook lets you know if people e-mailing you or in Outlook 2003, the "Persons Tag" will let
you know if users are online. To disable this, for Outlook 2003, click the Tools menu in
Outlook, then choose Options, choose the Other tab, uncheck "Enable the Person Names Smart
Tag" and click OK.

For Outlook 2002/XP, open Outlook, click the Tools menu, then Options, then the Other tab,
and uncheck 'Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook'.

Internet Explorer does not in itself use Messenger. However, Hotmail makes use of it, so if
you're at the Hotmail website, you'll get this message.

As well, to be more clear, the message indicates that *an application* is using Messenger, it
doesn't have to be these applications. For instance, Recent versions of Norton Antivirus
added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature which also will cause this to happen. To
disable this, right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area
(by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then
uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
