Applications slower to open

I notice that applications take a few seconds longer to
launch with MS Antispyware running. For example, if I
double-click on an Office document, nothing happens for
three or four seconds - then the document opens. With
Antispyware turned off, the document opens immediately.

Yes, after installing MSAS there is a slight slowness in the performance of
your computer, especially after doing a scan. It could possibly attributed
the Error log files in your temp directory, its also best if you defrag your
computer after doing a first time scan and empty temp files and disable any
unwanted programs that might be starting up with your system and running the
background.

If that were the case, then why does it immediately speed
up so much just by disabling 'MSAS'?

I have the same problem. A program called gcasDtServ.exe is
using almost all my CPU power.

Have the same problem of speed. However, for me it is good
enough to disable "Real Time Protection" to have full
speed again. Give it a try.
I reported this effect already.
