Christopher

I am running XP Home SP2 and it has never given a moments problem for some
months.

In the past couple of days, I have [say] Excel, IE6 and maybe Firefox open
but when I return to the computer, Excel has close and Firefox is asking if
I wish to close tabs [ in the same way as if I have clicked on the cross].

Any ideas please ??

I am running the climate change program in the background that can take up
to 98 percent resources but is supposed to be low priority. Screensaver is
very basic.

Screensaver is very basic.

1. Make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:

2. I have no idea what "the climate change program" is, but try stopping
it. If your problems disappear, then you have the answer.

3. Look in Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

What could cause programs closing without local user interaction...
-Hibernation settings: check these settings in Windows and in BIOS
-stuck ALT or CTRL keys on the keyboard: but this would require user
pressing other keys and you would see a prompt to close immediately. Have a
young child, cat or other pet that might be pressing keys when you're not
looking?
-remote access: Is it possible that there's another user for this machine
that is trying to connect remotely?
-remote access trojans (aka RAT): check system thoroughly, may even want to
run a rootkit detector. Search these groups for one of Malke's posts on
cleaning up a system. It's a nice set of directions - comprehensive without
being overwhelming.

The unwanted network traffic could be an offshoot of malware or some other
aggressive software installed on the system. Malke's posts will help with
this too.
