I am running XP in a University environment. When I leave the office
(to work in a lab) the machine logs out after about half an hour. This
is annoying because it takes 5 minutes to log back in. Is there some
way I can prevent the log out?

It doesn't log me out if I move the mouse or do something else to show
the machine is still in use. Is there some application I can do to
automate this?

If you can go to Display Properties, Screen Saver tab, and deselect "On
resume, password protect", that might be all that's needed. Otherwise,
you may need to go to Control Panel, Power Options, and disable Standby
and Hibernate options. Or simply increase the time before the
"offending feature" kicks in.

Since this is being used in a University environment, this setting
might be part of the entire network environment setting. You will
need to contact the IT support department and discuss this issue with
them.

I agree. It is probably part of the security for the University network.

I don't know.... #0 minutes of idle time before the system locks?
That's awfully lax security. 5 or maybe 10 minutes would be more
reasonable for a security policy.

You want something to send a keep-alive signal; lots of 3rd party apps
for that. Would work if they don't monitor for that, too. Real IT's
aren't stupid people as a rule.

How vividly I recall the hours of endless fun I had as a student when I
discovered an unlocked system...

My best ever was to replace all of the mechanisms that you can use to
display your files with a bogus program which stated simply: "Your disk
is empty".
