HI

I have a problem that is not new to this forum. The same
question has been posted before, but the answer has not
yet been given.

I am trying to share an application with a friend, but I
get the SIP timeout error mssg. We have both disabled our
XP firewalls for this session. We are connected through
adsl and router. Messenger version is 6.1.

Your help is needed and appreciated :-)

Kris

Greetings Kris,

The problem is the router. In order to use Application Sharing through Messenger, the router
will need to support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). There may be a firmware update for the
router to add UPnP capability or you may simply need to turn on UPnP in the router's
configuration. Unfortunately without UPnP, Application Sharing in Messenger will not work
through the router.

If UPnP isn't available, another thing you might try is to simply use Netmeeting (which uses
the standard T.120 for Application Sharing support, which your router most likely does
support). You can start Netmeeting by clicking Start, then Run, type "conf" and click OK.
After Netmeeting is loaded and you've set it up, you'll simply need to call your contact
(using their IP address) by clicking the Call menu, then New Call. If they do not know their
IP address, just have them go over to www.whatismyip.com and give you the information it
tells them. As well, you may need to set your computer into the DMZ of the router (see the
router documentation) in order for Netmeeting to properly function.
