Hi There. I have a process running in windows task
manager that I don't know what it is for. I would like to
remove it, but do not know what installed it. I know
there is a way to do this but cannot remember. Please Help
Scenario: there is an unknown or suspicious process visible in Task Manger.
How do you check it out/remove it?
It may or may not be easy. A quick thing you can do is to search the Web for
the process name. Often, others will have asked the same question and you
might find an answer. You also need to find the actual executable file (use
Search) on your computer. The location might tell you what it is; also you
can right-click and read the version and summary information in Properties -
if the executable is reputable, it probably has some useful info. Then you
can see if the application has an entry in Control Panel - Add/Remove
programs - this is the best way to remove it, if so.
Presuming you are sure you don't want it, then of course you can also delete
the file. You need to stop the process first (End Process in Task Manager).
If it is a nasty piece of spyware or adware, that might not work. Then you
have to resort to spyware/adware removal software and/or advice gleaned from
the Web.
