Application Icons get hijacked and I can't change them back

When I installed Adobe Photoshop Elements, it changed the icon associated with all of my bmp files to the adobe icon. I prefer to use good old paint for bitmaps and so tried to fix the file association. I got it to the point where it will open with paint, but it still displays the adobe icon. I can't find anything that allows me to change the icon. Any ideas

I have other instances of this same issue. My MP3's all show the icon for nero media player although they actually open with windows media player

I take that you have fixed it so the .bmp files are opening with Paint all
the time? If so open My Computer,Tools, Folder Options, File Types then
scroll down to .bmp extension listing. Highlight then click advanced button,
then click change icon button. Either type in
C:\Windows\System32\mspaint.exe or you can use the browse button to navigate
to this file and enter it. The same procedure can be used to change icons
on other files & file types.
