I am having difficulties with "Application Hanging" in Outlook 2003, when I
Send/Recieve to an account on an IMAP e-mail server, in Windows XP Pro. I'm
using MacAfee Antivirus 8.5, and have unblocked several of the options in the
Access Scanner, yet the Outlook Application will still lock up. The Microsoft
Knowledge Base articles don't give any solution to this problem. Does anyone
have any ideas about how to configure Outlook to stop this problem.

Configure McAffee to NOT scan email at all. Email virus/spam scanning does
nothing but cause problems for any email client its used with. Doing so
will NOT leave you vulnerable:

Disabling email protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and
malicious software in email. It is a separate layer of protection in
addition to Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including
email, as they are saved to your hard drive. As long as you keep your virus
definitions up to date with LiveUpdate, and keep Auto-Protect enabled and
set to scan files as they are created or downloaded, your system is fully
protected.

This applies to ALL email scanners, McAfee included.

The e-mail scanner worked quite well when we had our e-mail accounts on a
POP3 server but since we switched to an IMAP server, to send/recieve e-mail
is when the "Application Hanging" events started occuring. I appreciate your
response, but it seems it is applicable to a POP3 server, but not an IMAP
server. Thanks.

It applies to ANY type email account and ALL email clients; email scanning
does nothing but create problems where none exist. Note that if disabling
scanning does NOT resolve the issue, you can always turn it back on
