Well, I have posted this message on a few other message groups with
not a single reply, so I will give it a try here.

I have a digital camera photo download program that works perfectly on
my computer. But when the program runs on my friend's identical
computer, it freezes at the same point every time, just after the
photos in camera memory are displayed but before they can be saved to
the computer. Starting task manager, highlighting the program and
clicking "end task" but then cancelling causes the program to "wake
up" and then the program proceeds normally to completion.

Is there a log or utility program or procedure that I could use to
trouble shoot this problem?

Regards, jimbo

Do you connect the camera via the USB port? Also you don't say what O/S
you are using. If you connect via USB on winME or XP then you don't
really need to use the software to get at the pictures. The camera will
show up as a 'removable storage device' and have a drive letter assigned
to it. All you need to do is open 'my computer' and look for the new
drive. On that drive (perhaps within a subfolder) you should be able to
find your pictures and then just copy them from your camera onto your
HD.

Well, I have WinXP Home and yes, the camera connects to a USB port.
But this camera does not have a standard removable media such as
"Smart Media". Photos are stored in internal CMOS memory. The software
is needed to access the photos in the camera and download them to the
computer.

I found a memory tester from MS, downloaded a package, burned a
bootable CD and tested memory. No problems.

Any other suggestions on trouble shooting this program freeze problem?
What about Dr. Watson?

is the USB 2.0 or 1.1? Maybe the drivers for the USB needs to be
updated.
The camera software has an update? My fugifilm S5000 software had
similar problems when I first
loaded it. Web site had an update.

Well, both computers have USB 2.0 with the same drivers and the camera
software and drivers are the latest.

have you remove all other USB devices on your friends computer then
tried. My Epson does polling of the USB header periodically and
interrupts production sometimes.

If I were you I would uninstall the software, disconnect all other USB
devices and then re-install the software. Only saying this because I
helped someone who had a problem installing a 2nd USB imaging device on
his XP computer - there were no end of problems and it would just refuse
to be recognised for what it was. In the end I had to disconnect his
printer/scanner before the 2nd device would install at all, and it only
works correctly when his printer/scanner is not connected and vice-
versa. Not saying that your camera is being installed as any kind of
imaging device, but you may possibly be getting some kind of conflict
during install/use of software.

Yes, this camera does show up as an imaging device in Device Manager
when it is connected to a USB port. There are no other devices
attached to the computer. And I have uninstalled and reinstalled the
camera software several times. The frustrating thing is that
everything works perfectly on my computer. And as far as I can tell
both computers are identical, Sony PCG-GRT150, 2.8 GHz P4M, 512 MB
Ram, 60 GB HD, CD-RW/DVD, 16 inch screen and each has a PCMCIA D-Link
wireless NIC installed. There are slight differences in installed
software. Maybe I will just have to start removing software one
application at a time. I guees I could uninstall and reinstall the USB
hub and port drivers.
