What version of Windows? What other anti-malware applications are
installed?

I have also had this problem. I am running Windows Vista SP1 and every once in a while it works but that is right after it has an update. When I start my computer up again it doesn't work.

If you are not running Windows Live OneCare or a Symantec (or perhaps other
vendors as well) Antivirus suite program, then my recommendations for Vista
is to do start, all programs, accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and
choose run as administrator.

In the command prompt window, type

sfc /scannow

and hit enter.

Wait until this completes, and restart the machine.

I ran that but the window still popped up after restart. The scan said that
there were errors. still cannot run defender.

If you have the patience, I'd recommend calling Microsoft 1-866-pcsafety

(too many digits--just leave the last one off or dial it--makes no
difference!)

This is a free support line for issues with security patches, or virus or
spyware infections. Not being able to run Windows Defender qualifies as a
security issue, I would expect.

Let's see what they recommend. They have the capability of doing remote
support, so they can actually see what is happening with the sfc /scannnow
command, which we really can't easily handle in a newsgroup support thread.

Let me know if doing this really isn't practical, or if it doesn't resolve
the issue--or, if the issue IS resolved, what they recommended?

Thanks!

I'm running McAfee Security Centre and am getting the message "Application
failed to initialize" with the same error code. I suppose that is because
McAfee has taken over from Defender. If so how do I get rid of the message
which appears every time I log on?

The followed the instructions for running the command sfc /scannow, and
received the following error:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them.
Details are included in the CBS>log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

When I attempt to open the log file, I receive an error message stating I'm
not authorized.

Interesting--I can open that file on my system, but I'm running Windows 7.

you might want to try running notepad or whatever app you are opening the
log file in as administrator.

Or, you might want to call 1-866-pcsafety if you are in the U.S. or Canada
to get direct help from Microsoft PSS staff. If you are elsewhere in the
world, call the nearest number for Microsoft support--the call may not be
toll free, but support for this issue should be free.
