I want to re-install OS but don't want to lose data. It's been a long time
since I last re-installed so I don't remember what applications I have
downloaded. I figure if I know all the extensions that applications have I
can look in Windows Explorer for those applications and backup any I want to
save. Where can I go to find out the comprehensive list of application
extensions?

Thank you.

Your best option is to go here:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Download, install and run Belarc. It will tell you all the programs you have
on your computer. What you need to do then is to ensure that you have the
INSTALLATION media for each program, ie all the files you used to INSTALL
the program in the first place.

Hi,

Backing up the application executable (.exe) or program folder is not going
to be of any use in a clean installation. If you create a clean
installation, you will need to reinstall the applications using the original
installation media (most of which are probably CD's you purchased). You
can't merely place the program folder or executable back on the system and
run it, it needs supporting registry entries and possibly library files all
of which are created by the installation routine.

If you do a repair installation rather than a clean one, then your programs
should be preserved "as is". See this link for details on this procedure:
